The Korean Skincare Routine, Step by Step

Ten steps sounds like a lot. In practice, most people settle on five or six that genuinely make a difference. Here is how to figure out which ones matter for your skin.

Why Layering Works

Korean skincare philosophy centres on layering thin, targeted products rather than relying on one heavy cream to do everything. Each layer addresses a specific need: cleansing, hydrating, treating, protecting. When applied lightest to heaviest, they absorb efficiently and build on each other without pilling or congestion.

The goal is not to use as many products as possible. It is to give your skin exactly what it needs and nothing it does not.

Step 1: Oil Cleanser

An oil-based cleanser dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and the sebum that accumulates throughout the day. Massage it onto dry skin for about a minute, then add water. The oil should turn milky as it emulsifies. Rinse thoroughly.

This step is most important in the evening. In the morning, you can skip it unless your skin is particularly oily.

Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser

Follow the oil cleanser with a low-pH gel or foam cleanser. This second wash removes any remaining residue and water-soluble impurities that the oil cleanser left behind. Avoid anything above pH 6 as it can disrupt your acid mantle.

Step 3: Exfoliant (2-3 times per week)

Chemical exfoliants such as AHAs (glycolic, lactic) and BHAs (salicylic acid) dissolve dead cells more evenly than physical scrubs. Start with low concentrations and use them only a few evenings per week. Your skin needs recovery time between sessions.

Step 4: Toner

Korean toners are nothing like the astringent, alcohol-heavy formulas popular in the West during the 1990s. These are thin, watery liquids designed to rebalance pH and add a first layer of hydration. Pat them into skin with your palms rather than using a cotton pad.

Step 5: Essence

An essence sits between a toner and a serum in consistency. It is usually fermented and rich in amino acids. Essences boost cell turnover and prepare skin to absorb the concentrated treatments that follow. A few drops pressed into damp skin is enough.

Step 6: Serum or Ampoule

This is where you target specific concerns. Vitamin C for brightening, hyaluronic acid for hydration, retinol for texture, niacinamide for pores. Pick one or two serums at most. Layering too many actives at once can cause irritation rather than improvement.

Step 7: Sheet Mask (optional, 1-2 times per week)

Sheet masks deliver a concentrated dose of essence over 15 to 20 minutes. They are useful when your skin needs a recovery boost after travel, dry weather, or a late night. Press the remaining liquid into your face after removing the mask.

Step 8: Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is thinner and produces less oil. A dedicated eye cream with peptides or caffeine can reduce puffiness and fine lines. Apply with your ring finger using gentle tapping motions.

Step 9: Moisturiser

Lock in everything with a moisturiser suited to your skin type. Gel formulas work for oily skin; cream textures suit dry or mature skin. The key ingredient to look for is ceramides, which reinforce your skin barrier and prevent water loss.

Step 10: Sunscreen (morning only)

No skincare routine means anything if you skip sun protection. UV exposure undoes the work of every serum and treatment in your cabinet. Use at least SPF 30, applied generously, every morning regardless of weather. Reapply every two hours if you are outdoors.

How to Simplify

You do not need all ten steps every day. A practical daily routine for most people looks like this:

  1. Cleanser (oil + water in the evening, water-based only in the morning)
  2. Toner
  3. One targeted serum
  4. Moisturiser
  5. Sunscreen (AM)

Add extras like sheet masks and exfoliants a few times per week as your skin responds. The best routine is one you actually stick with.
